BROOKINGS – South Dakota State University students Logan Haak and Paige O’Farrell each received a $2,000 scholarship from the South Dakota Parks and Recreation Association.
The students were recently recognized at the association’s annual conference in Rapid City.
“The SDPRA student scholarship program is very competitive and attracts applications from students with diverse academic backgrounds. Being awarded this scholarship is an honor and more importantly it provides the recipients with endless opportunities for their future career,” said Stella Liu, the association’s scholarship chair and an assistant professor at SDSU. “The association puts so much effort into nurturing our students and the SDPRA scholarship is a great investment in our youth and the future of parks and recreation in South Dakota.”
Haak, who is from Yankton, is a senior majoring in sport and recreation management. He has worked in the public recreation sector, teaching summer classes and managing the cashiers at a local pool.
O’Farrell, who is from Sioux Falls, is in her second year pursuing a master’s degree in sport and recreation administration. She has worked nearly 2,000 hours planning and teaching hunting, fishing, environmental education and outdoor skills classes to the people of Sioux Falls. O’Farrell is the programming intern at Dakota Nature Park and Brookings County Outdoor Adventure Center in Brookings.
The SDPRA student scholarship program promotes and supports excellence in the field of park and recreation by providing financial assistance for both undergraduate and graduate students who are majoring in a South Dakota college and university with a parks and recreation emphasis. Two students in the recreation, parks and/or natural resource management field are each awarded a $2,000 scholarship following review of applications.
