Sully Buttes wins Class B title

ABERDEEN – Sully Buttes scored the first 20 points in the fourth quarter to beat Clark/Willow Lake 58-55 in the championship game of the Class B Boys’ Basketball Tournament on Saturday night at the Barnett Center.

The Cyclones were up 15-12 after a quarter, 27-24 at halftime and 48-38 through three.

The Chargers turned the tables in the final stanza, turning the 10-point deficit into a 10-point advantage – 58-48 – with 34 seconds to go.

Jacob Howard opened the period with a traditional 3-point play and Lincoln Jordre added a basket.

Nick Wittler buried a pair of 3-pointers, the second of which put Sully Buttes on top 49-48 with 5:18 showing on the clock. Another Jordre bucket push the margin to 51-48 midway through the quarter.

Wittler canned another 3-ball with 2:02 to play, before Devan Klevan (:46) and Howard (:34) both went 2-for-2 at the free-throw line to end the run.

CWL’s Bradyn Rusher had a four-point play with 18 seconds left and Jacob Prouty hit a trey with 8 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 58-55.

The Cyclones got the ball back with 6 seconds left but Rusher’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer missed the mark.

Wittler finished 6-of-13 from deep for 18 points.

Howard posted a double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds.

Jordre scored 16 points.

Kleven totaled five points, 10 boards and six assists.

For CWL, Prouty ended up with 21 points.

Ntai Stevens ended up with a double-double of 12 points and 10 boards. Rusher added nine points and Micah Burke seven.

Second-seeded Sully Buttes ended up with a 25-1 record. Clark/Willow Lake, seeded fourth, went 20-6.

Notes: Sully Buttes improved to 2-0 in title games, adding a championship in 2009. Onida was also 2-0 in finals, winning two-class B finals in 1953 and 1969.

Third place

• Bridgewater-Emery 87, White River 79, 2OT

The top-seeded and defending-champion Huskies (22-4) closed with a win, prevailing versus the third-seeded Tigers (22-4) after two extra sessions.

White River led 19-12 after a quarter, 38-26 at halftime and 61-47 through three. Sawyer Schultz capped a furious Bridgewater-Emery rally with two free throws with 14 seconds left to tie the score at 66-66 and send the game into overtime.

The Tigers’ Teron Sazue hit a 3-pointer with 1 second left in OT to knot things up at 75-all.

Trailing 79-77 with 90 seconds to go, the Huskies scored the game’s final 10 points to pull out the victory.

Schultz tied the score at 79-79 with a bucket and then scored again to make it 81-79 with 1:22 left. Cole Gassman sandwiched a pair of 2-for-2 trips to the foul line around Jamin Arend’s two freebies to provide for the final margin.

Schultz scored a tournament-high 38 points on 15-of-23 shooting and grabbed 14 rebounds to complete the double-double. He dished out six assists and came up with three steals.

Aren added 18 points and nine boards. Carter Dye posted a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds.

The Huskies shot 50 percent (32-of-64).

For the Tigers, Nick Sayler scored 23 points, Sazue 15, Tyson Iyotte 13 and Donnie Yackley 10. Jadice Morrison pulled down 10 boards and chipped in with eight markers.

Fifth place

• Timber Lake 64, Canistota 52

Brayden PayPay scored 28 points as the seventh-seeded Panthers (21-4) beat the No. 5 Hawks (21-5).

Timber Lake led 19-14 after a quarter, 33-25 at halftime and 47-39 through three.

Tucker Kraft added 14 points and nine boards and Jackson Harrison contributed 11 markers, as the Panthers shot 51 percent (26-of-51) from the field and hit eight 3-balls.

Canistota’s Connor Carlson put up a double-double with 22 points and 14 boards. Tyce Ortman scored 10 points.

Seventh place

• Lower Brule 45, Langford Area 32

The eighth-seeded Sioux (17-9) outscored the sixth-seeded Lions (20-6) 26-10 in the second half.

Langford was up 9-5 after a quarter and 22-19 at halftime. Lower Brule moved ahead 31-27 entering the fourth and then held a 14-5 scoring advantage over the final 8 minutes.

Reserve Jayshawn Milton posted a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Shane Sazue Jr. poured in a game-high 18 points off the bench and Kevin Peterson tallied 14 markers.

Langford’s Colin Frey ended up with 11 points.
