Summit League Food Fight starts Monday

BROOKINGS – South Dakota State University student-athletes will attempt to defend their Summit League Food Fight title again by conducting a series of collection events over the next two weeks.

Starting Monday, SDSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee members will be collecting donations at all home athletic events at Frost Arena, in the University Student Union Jan. 25 and 31, and at a variety of community events. Besides food donations, cash and Hobo Dough are accepted. A $5 donation equals 13 pounds of food and all food and cash donations will be directed to the Brookings Food Pantry.

Local law enforcement, schools and businesses are also teaming up for the Food Fight efforts, including a Jan. 24 event at the Brookings Culver’s from 5-10 p.m. In conjunction with the Jackrabbit Basketball Coaches Show Feb. 5 at 5 p.m., Cubby’s Sports Bar and Grill in downtown Brookings will be a site for donations.

Hy-Vee will sponsor a donation drive at its Brookings store Jan. 26 all day and multiple area schools are holding food drives during the two-week period.

Also, the “Pie in the Face” contest is back by popular demand. SDSU Director of Athletics Justin Sell, head wrestling coach Chris Bono, head men’s basketball coach T.J. Otzelberger, head football coach John Stiegelmeier and Senior Associate AD Kathy Heylens will be “pied” at one of the home events. The staff member who has the most money in their collection jar, which will be available at home athletic events, will be pied.

In addition to the Food Fight events, cash donations or checks made payable to the Brookings Area Food Pantry can be dropped off at the Jackrabbit Ticket Office inside the Stanley J. Marshall Center during weekday business hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and at the Dykhouse Student-Athlete Center (Room 114).

SDSU has won five consecutive Summit League Food Fight titles. The Jackrabbits collected a record 43,800 pounds of food during the 2016-17 Summit League Food Fight.
