Sun Devils drop Jackrabbits 2-0

BROOKINGS – Alexia Delgado scored in the 21st minute and Nicole Douglas added a goal in the 77th minute as Arizona State defeated South Dakota State 2-0 in a women’s soccer match Monday evening at Fishback Soccer Park.

“First, thanks to Arizona State for making the trip to Brookings,” coach Brock Thompson told SDSU Sports Information. “It’s not every year we get to play a team like that at home. They’re a very good team and they made us better today.

“I’m very proud of our team by the way we fought and battled. I thought we had some moments to flip the game, and credit to Arizona State for capitalizing on their moments.”

Sydney Day made two saves to earn the shutout win in goal.

The Sun Devils outshot the Jackrabbits 12-10, including 8-2 on goal. SDSU held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Jackrabbit goalkeeper Maggie Smither made five saves.

Annie Williams had four shots, including one on goal, for SDSU.

ASU was whistled for 13 fouls and SDSU five. The Sun Devils’ Angela Boyle (29th minute) and Isabel Dehakiz (64th minute) both received yellow cards.

Arizona State (3-2) heads to Flagstaff, Ariz., to face Northern Arizona on Friday.

South Dakota State (4-4), which went 4-2 in its six-game homestand, takes on Idaho State on Thursday at 5 p.m. in Pocatello, Idaho.
