BROOKINGS – A Brookings man was arrested on several charges stemming from an incident in which he allegedly assaulted a woman, threatened her with a BB gun, and kept her from leaving, according to Brookings authorities.

David Walker, 43, was being held on $10,000 cash-only bond at the Brookings County Detention Center as of Wednesday afternoon with a bond hearing expected to take place Thursday morning.

Brookings County State’s Attorney Dan Nelson said Wednesday that his office will file a complaint against Walker for aggravated assault and kidnapping.

The incident was reported at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday and occurred in the 500 block of Fifth Avenue South, Assistant Police Chief Derrick Powers said.

Walker and the woman were known to each other, Powers said.

“It was reported that the male subject had physically assaulted the female by striking her several times and also attempted to strangle her and refused to let her leave the residence for an extended period of time,” Powers said.

“He’d also threatened her verbally and also with a BB gun,” he added.

After some time, the woman was able to leave. Authorities were contacted and officers went to the residence and arrested Walker on suspicion of aggravated assault and kidnapping. He was transported to the Brookings County Detention Center.

“It was found he had been drinking,” Powers said.

The woman is a 38-year-old Brookings resident.

The officers called for an ambulance, but she declined medical treatment at the scene, Powers said.
