SV boys suffer first loss; girls win

MITCHELL – Dakota Valley (10-0) handed Sioux Valley (12-1) its first loss of the season to cap the Hanson Boys’ Basketball Classic on Saturday night in the Corn Palace, winning 86-73.

The Panthers raced out to a 27-13 advantage after a quarter. The Cossacks pulled within 40-31 at halftime; however, it was 66-46 at the end of three.

Sophomore Isaac Bruns led all scorers with 35 points and 13-of-17 shooting.

Paul Bruns posted a big double-double of 27 points and 17 rebounds.

Dakota Valley shot 61.2 percent (30-of-49) from the field, including 10-of-19 from 3-point range.

Sioux Valley’s Oliver Vincent had 27 points.

Kelton Vincent added 19 points and Parker Puetz 11.

The Cossacks shot 48 percent (24-of-50) and hit 14 of their 26 attempts from deep.

Sioux Valley (12-1) takes on regional foe Flandreau (9-1) on the road Thursday, Feb. 4.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

 Sioux Valley 59, Dell Rapids 58

VOLGA – Abbie Schneider grabbed an offensive rebound and found Ashley Bjerke for the go-ahead basketball with 11 seconds remaining.

The Cossacks were up 16-8 after a quarter but the Quarriers moved ahead 27-22 at halftime and led 46-37 heading to the fourth.

Isabelle Bloker had 14 points to lead a balanced attack. Bjerke added 11 points and Julia Schneider and Reagan Johnson both 10. Abbie Schneider had six points, 10 rebounds and six assists.

Dell Rapids (2-10) got 16 points from Zoey Hilmoe and 14 by Mady Vanoverbeke.

Sioux Valley improved to 7-3. The Big East Conference Tournament is Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
