Tanner leads SDSU golf in opening round

PALM DESERT, Calif. – The South Dakota State men’s golf team is in 16th place in an elite 21-team field at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.

Through the initial 18 holes, the Jackrabbits hold a team score of 297 (+9). Oregon leads the field at 10-under-par 278, while Charlotte is in second with 279 (-9).

“We saw a lot of good things to start the spring,” said head golf coach Golf Casey VanDamme. “The guys did a great job at competing today.  We are looking forward to tomorrow.”

Jack Tanner leads the way for State tied for 20th at 1-under-par 71. Matthew Schaefer is also in the top 40 in a 119-player field at 1-over-par 73. Jonah Dohrer shot a 75 (+3), while Jacob Otta went 6-over-par 78.

Sam Batta rounds out the Jackrabbit lineup with 83 (+11).

South Dakota State competes in round two of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate with a double-tee start off of holes 1 and 10 starting at 9 a.m. CT/7 a.m. P.T. Saturday.
