Teachers: ‘We miss you’

BROOKINGS – Remote learning for Brookings School District students started Monday. Students will learn from the safety of their own homes until at least May 1, per the recommendation of Gov. Kristi Noem.

The Brookings School District has been working to provide all students with the needed materials for their remote learning. Some students received packets with their homework in it, and others received computers and Wi-Fi hotspots if they didn’t have access to the internet at home.

At right, kindergartner Raiden Lameyer and his mother, Sunny Lameyer, went to Medary Elementary on Monday to pick up the materials for Raiden’s schoolwork to be done at home. Inside his bag of goodies were various packets for him to work through and a few snacks provided by his teachers, to help give their students some motivation for completing homework.

Medary Elementary staff created a variety of chalk drawings outside the school to brighten students’ day, and also set out all of the lost-and-found items discovered at the school for the kids to pick up and take back home along with their remote learning supplies.

Sunny Lameyer has a high school-age son and said that day one of remote learning for him had been “quite easy.” All high schoolers have a laptop they can work from, and all faculty have transitioned their homework to being done on the computer.
