BROOKINGS – To assist families during the delayed start of classes at Mickelson Middle School, the Brookings School District is working with the Boys and Girls Club.

The club will continue with its summer hours of 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Brookings Teen Center the week of Aug. 19 as well as Monday, Aug. 26; Tuesday, Aug. 27; Wednesday, Aug. 28; and Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The Teen Center school prep days will be moved up to Aug. 29 and Aug. 30.

“Teens will need to remember to pack a sack lunch. Also, any teen can come to the Club for $1 per day if they are not a member,” says a notice on the Brookings School District website.

The Brookings School District will provide transportation to middle school students on a regular bus route if they wish to attend the Boys and Girls Club.

The Brookings School Board took action Thursday to delay the start of classes at Mickelson Middle School due to behind-schedule construction at the school. MMS back-to-school registration is now set for Sept. 3, with classes beginning Sept. 4. The start date for other schools in the district remains Aug. 23.

“All other schools in the Brookings School District will begin and operate as scheduled. While we know this is an unfortunate and inconvenient circumstance for everyone involved, the district is committed to the safety and wellbeing of the students and staff in the school,” the message on the district website says.

The Boys and Girls Club and ECE hours for elementary and early childhood students will be the normal school hours, and their prep days will still be Aug. 21 and Aug. 22, according to a message from club CEO Tim Lease.

Anyone with questions regarding the school district’s message or the start of school at the middle school should contact MMS Principal Tim Steffensen or MMS Assistant Principal Todd Foster.
