BROOKINGS – A Texas man was cited for hit-and-run and other charges this weekend after police say his pickup collided with a parked car, causing thousands of dollars in damage.

Brookings Police officers came upon a wrecked 2005 Buick LeSabre at 21st Avenue and Iowa Street at 1:39 a.m. Saturday, Lt. Marci Gebers said.

Gebers said the car, legally parked near the intersection, was struck on the driver’s side and pushed onto the boulevard and against a tree. Officers located some debris from a suspect vehicle and a shoe at the scene.

Officers canvassed the area and located a 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 with front-end damage outside a local hotel. A shoe matching one left at the scene was also found. Officers were unable to contact the driver and had the pickup towed, Gebers said.

The following evening, the pickup driver, 27-year-old Kedric Ramirez of Texas, came to the police department, admitted to being the driver in the crash and said he’d fallen asleep, struck the parked car and fled, Gebers reported.

Ramirez was cited for reckless driving, hit-and-run, and failure to maintain financial responsibility, Gebers said. Damage is estimated at $4,000 to the Buick and $1,700 to the pickup.

No injuries were reported.
