Brookings and Sioux Valley dominated the All-Register team with three selections apiece.

The Bobcats (20-6) and Cossacks (19-3) combined for 39 wins against nine losses this season.

Sioux Valley senior Tayt Vincent is on the All-Register squad for the fourth time and was also honored as the Register Player of the Year.

The nine-member All-Register team is comprised of four seniors and five juniors, and includes eight guards.

Brookings had a solid core of seniors this season, as three of them made the All-Register team – Brennan Carlson, Carter Holm and Josh Mohs.

The Bobcats won their first Eastern South Dakota Conference championship since 1988, posting a 14-2 record in league games this year.

They then opened the District 1AA tourney with a 49-44 defeat of Watertown on Feb. 28.

Brookings fell 53-48 at eventual state champion Sioux Falls O’Gorman in the district final March 3, but bounced back by beating Brandon Valley – the runner-up in the ESD – for the third time in as many tries, 68-56, in the Region 1A game March 7 to qualify for state.

The second-seeded Bobcats dropped a 56-52 overtime heartbreaker to Aberdeen Central to open the state tournament and fell 54-53 to third-seeded Rapid City Stevens in the consolation semifinals.

Brookings capped a 20-win campaign with a 71-70 double-overtime defeat of Harrisburg in the seventh-place game.

Vincent is joined on the All-Register squad by junior teammates Trevor Hanson and Trevor Olson.

The Cossacks, who averaged 80.8 points per game, won the Big East Conference (7-0) and Lake Central Conference (6-0) titles. They also took the BEC Tournament championship, beating Flandreau 62-51 on Jan. 7 in Garretson.

Sioux Valley cruised past Redfield/Doland 97-43 – hitting a school-record 19 3-pointers – in the Region 2A semifinals on March 2 to nab the top seed in the Sweet 16. However, they dropped an 85-79 decision in OT to Dakota Valley on March 7 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.

Rounding out the All-Register team are juniors Bodee Gross of Colman-Egan, Dylan LeBrun of Flandreau and Will Parry of Arlington.

LeBrun is a three-time honoree.

Colman-Egan (15-7, 8-0) ran the table in Dakota Valley Conference play to claim the regular-season title. The Hawks beat Oldham-Ramona/Rutland 48-28 in a District 7B semifinal before falling 60-50 to Chester Area in the final.

Flandreau (17-5) took second in the BEC (6-1) and third in the LCC (4-2).

The Fliers dropped Flandreau Indian School 81-57 in the first round of Region 3A action but fell 70-52 to eventual state runner-up Madison in the semifinals.

Arlington (14-8, 7-1) was the DVC runner-up but did win the league tourney via a 50-44 defeat of the Hawks on Jan. 21 in Colman.

The Cardinals opened District 5B play with a 48-31 win over De Smet. Castlewood topped Arlington 56-50 in the district title game.

No nominations were received from Deubrook Area, Estelline or Oldham-Ramona/Rutland.

Brennan Carlson – G/F

Brookings

6-3, Sr.

Carlson led a balanced Bobcat squad in both scoring and rebounding.

“Brennan is the type of player that goes out and does whatever is necessary or whatever possible to make the team successful,” said coach Travis Engebretson. “He is a fierce competitor who made great improvements throughout the season.”

Carlson averaged 13.1 points and eight rebounds per game, while adding 1.5 assists and one steal.

Carlson earned all-tournament honors at state. In the 71-70 double-overtime victory over Harrisburg in the seventh-place game, he scored a career-high 29 points and made the game-winning bucket with 17 seconds to go.

He played in 54 career games with 48 starts, totaling 555 points and 325 rebounds – averages of 10.3 and six, respectively.

Carlson was an All-ESD selection.

Bodee Groos – G

Colman-Egan

5-10, Jr.

The point guard was one of the top players in the DVC and helped lead the Hawks to the regular-season title.

“Bodee led by example for us throughout the season and brought intensity every day by listening, competing and making his teammates better,” said coach Jeff Larsen.

Colman-Egan was balanced offensively, with Groos leading the way with 11.8 points per game.

He was second on the team in rebounds (5.2), assists (2.4) and steals (1.8).

Groos, who helped lead the Hawks to the Class 9A state football championship in the fall and was an All-State quarterback, earned a spot on the All-DVC first team in basketball.

Trevor Hanson – F/C

Sioux Valley

6-7, Jr.

Hanson was the Cossacks’ anchor down low, averaging a double-double.

“Trevor is a force in the paint both offensively and defensively,” said coach Bill Vincent. “He is one of the few players we have ever had average a double-double for the season.

“He took over a few of the big games for us.”

Hanson totaled 13.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game to go with two blocks. He had 20 dunks.

Hanson shot 75 percent from the charity stripe, as the Cossacks broke a school record with a 72-percent clip as a team for the year.

Hanson dominated down the stretch while tallying 24 points and 17 boards in Sioux Valley’s win over Flandreau in the BEC Tournament final. He blocked eight shots in a game versus McCook Central/Montrose.

Hanson scored 23 points on 10-of-10 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds in a 97-43 win over Redfield/Doland in the Region 2A semifinals.

He was named to the All-BEC first team and All-LCC team.

Carter Holm – G

Brookings

6-3, Sr.

Holm played both guard positions for the Bobcats, finishing second on the team in rebounds (4.3) and assists (three) per game and third in points (9.7).

“Carter was our leader both on and off the court,” Engebretson said. “He was our inspirational leader that pushed his teammates to be better.

“Carter’s teammates could always count on him during adversity as he always played with poise.”

Holm played in 49 career games with 26 starts – all this season. He ended up with 328 points, 147 rebounds and 101 assists.

Dylan LeBrun – G

Flandreau

6-6, Jr.

LeBrun, who is on the All-Register team for a third consecutive season, again proved to be one of the top scorers in the state while also improving other aspects of his game.

“Dylan is a do everything player,” said coach Brendan Sheppard. “He is a great scorer, and this year really improved other areas of his game. He was our leading rebounder and assist man.”

The point guard dropped in 22.5 points per game while adding 8.5 rebounds and five assists. He shot 86 percent (123-of-143) at the foul line.

LeBrun is already the Fliers’ all-time leading scorer with 1,519 points with one season still to go.

He made the All-BEC first team and the All-LCC squad.

Josh Mohs – G

Brookings

6-1, Sr.

Mohs was one of the Bobcats’ most explosive players out of his point guard position.

“Josh’s unselfish leadership was a key in the success for the Bobcats this season,” Engebretson said. “He was willing to sacrifice his game at times to find better opportunities for his teammates.”

Mohs led the team in assists with 3.7 per game and was second with a scoring average of 12.5. He added 3.6 rebounds and 1.2 steals per outing.

He was named to the All-ESD squad.

Mohs competed in 52 games in his career, including 26 starts – all this season. He totaled 448 points, 137 rebounds and 121 assists.

Trevor Olson – G

Sioux Valley

6-4, Jr.

The sharp-shooting lefty hit a school-record 93 3-pointers in 22 games – 11 shy of the state record.

Olson first broke the single-game school record with eight treys against De Smet on Jan. 23. He then knocked down nine 3s – a mark later matched by teammate Tayt Vincent – in the next game versus Flandreau on Feb. 2. He scored 34 points against the Fliers.

“TO can score in bunches,” said Vincent. “He helped lead us to a school-record average of 80.8 points per game, including a team school-record of 19 made 3s as a team in one game.”

Olson scored 462 points for a per-game average of 21. He shot 42.9 percent (93-of-217) from long range. Olson ended up 84.4 percent (27-of-32) from the free-throw line and 46 percent from the field overall.

He was an All-BEC first-team performer and was also honored on the All-LCC squad.

Will Parry – G

Arlington

6-2, Jr.

The Dakota Valley Conference MVP had a standout season for the Cardinals, who finished second in the regular-season standings and won the league tourney.

He averaged 14.3 points per game while also leading Arlington in assists (3.4) and steals (1.7). Parry added 3.9 boards per game.

“Will did a great job of running and setting up our offenses all year long,” said coach Michael Parry. “He leads by his hard work, positive attitude and year-round dedication to the sport.”

Tayt Vincent – G

Sioux Valley

6-3, Sr.

The four-time All-Register selection broke numerous school records for the Cossacks and was named Register Player of the Year.

Vincent also made the All-Register team in 2016, 2014 and 2013 (as an eighth-grader). He missed a majority of his sophomore season with an injury.

Vincent was honored on the All-BEC first team and All-LCC squad.
