BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 127 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths in South Dakota Tuesday.

Three of the new cases are in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 3,309 total cases (two new confirmed and one new probable): 3,046 of those people have recovered (15 new), with 231 active cases (down by 12) and 32 deaths (no change). A total of 10,612 people (27 new) have tested negative in Brookings County, and 114 people (no change) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

There is one COVID-19 occupied hospital bed at the Brookings Hospital, the DOH website reported Tuesday.

Brookings County remains in the “substantial” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 105,786 (127 new – 112 confirmed plus 15 probable) as of midday Tuesday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 4,232 are classified as active (down by 381 from Monday). As of Tuesday, 99,887 people have recovered (508 new), 6,092 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (10 new), 200 people are currently hospitalized (down by three) for transmission-based precautions, and 1,667 people have died (no change).

The SDDOH website reports 286,539 people (334 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

Increases in positive cases Tuesday included, but are not limited to, 12 in Brown County, nine in Codington, eight in Lincoln, 32 in Minnehaha and 11 in Pennington.

The counties with the highest total case counts are Minnehaha (26,457), Pennington (12,068), Lincoln (7,248), Brown (4,785) and Codington (3,682).

The SDDOH website reported midday Monday that 57,476 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to 47,647 people in South Dakota.

In Brookings County, 1,551 vaccine doses have been administered to 1,333 people.

The figures released by the state Department of Health do not include individuals who are asymptomatic or have symptoms of the coronavirus but are not being tested.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
