99 new COVID-19 cases, three new deaths reported in South Dakota Wednesday

BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 99 new COVID-19 cases and three new deaths in South Dakota Wednesday.

Three of the new cases are in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 4,198 total cases (three new probable): 4,090 of those people have recovered (14 new), with 71 active cases (down by 11) and 37 deaths (no change). A total of 13,582 people have tested negative in Brookings County (28 new), and 153 people (no change) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

There are two COVID-19 occupied hospital beds at the Brookings Hospital, the SDDOH website reported Wednesday.

The county is in the “substantial” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 123,073 (99 new – 74 confirmed plus 25 probable) as of midday Wednesday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 1,385 are classified as active (down by 60 from Tuesday). As of Wednesday, 119,712 people have recovered (156 new), 7,417 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (14 new), 102 people are currently hospitalized (down by one) for transmission-based precautions, and 1,976 people have died (three new).

The SDDOH website reports 345,925 people (578 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

The new deaths, two women and one man, are being reported in Kingsbury, Lake and Todd counties. The age ranges of the deceased are one 60-69 years and two in the 80-plus years category.

Increases in positive cases Wednesday include, but are not limited to, nine in Brown County, 13 in Codington, five in Lincoln, 20 in Minnehaha and 16 in Pennington.

The SDDOH website reported midday Wednesday that 604,903 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 331,863 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System.

Doses administered by Indian Health Services, Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, Department of Defense and Bureau of Prisons are not included in the state’s vaccine count.

In Brookings County, 23,218 vaccine doses have been administered to 13,486 people, the SDDOH website reports. As of Wednesday, 38.4% of the total county population has received at least one vaccine dose, and 47.7% of those 16 years and older in Brookings County have received at least one vaccine dose.

The SDDOT reports 55.2% of the state population age 16 and older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, and 48% of the state population has completed its vaccination series.
