BROOKINGS – Alcohol played a role in three arrests from two separate incidents in Brookings over the weekend, according to information from the Brookings Police Department:

Hit-and-run

Cody Aiken, 20, of Brookings was arrested following an alleged hit-and-run incident in the 100 block of Medary Avenue at 9:20 p.m. Saturday, according to Sgt. Joel Perry with the BPD.

A witness saw the accident, and Aiken left the vehicle and ran, Perry alleged, adding that the witness made contact with Aiken, who then assaulted the witness. Aiken then ran into a nearby residence, and BPD officers arrived and made contact with him, Perry said.

Aiken was arrested on suspicion of DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, simple assault, and underage possession of alcohol.

Wrong-way travel

In an incident reported at 10:12 p.m. Sunday, Miguel Lozano, 41, of Jasper, Minnesota, and Abelardo Lozano, 41, were both arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to Perry.

The incident unfolded after the BPD received a traffic complaint of a vehicle in the 500 block of Sixth Street traveling the wrong way. Officers were able to make contact with the vehicle at approximately the intersection of Sixth Street and Western Avenue, Perry said. The vehicle stopped and the driver was identified as Miguel Lozano.

During the stop, Abelardo Lozano jumped into the driver’s seat of the vehicle and was subsequently arrested, Perry said.
