Tigers hold off Bobcats, 46-45

BROOKINGS – Harrisburg used an efficient offense – and a big third quarter – to squeak past the Bobcats, 46-45, in Eastern South Dakota girls’ basketball action on Friday night at Bob Jostad Gymnasium.

The Tigers outscored Brookings 19-12 to pull away from a 17-17 halftime deadlock and lead 36-29 through three quarters.

Harrisburg knocked down a 3-pointer and then scored in the lane to open up the fourth quarter to take its biggest lead of the game – 12 points – at 41-29 with 6:40 left.

From there the ‘Cats rallied, outscoring the visitors 12-2 over the final 4 1/2 minutes with a chance to tie the game inside of a minute.

But a 3-pointer to tie missed, as did the offensive-rebound putback as Brookings still trailed 46-43 with 53 seconds to play.

A team turnover by Harrisburg with 15 seconds on the clock gave the Bobcats one last chance and they got within two when Grace Eggebrecht scored to get it within a point with 3 seconds to play, before Sydney Halling’s free-throw miss on the other end allowed the final second to tick off.

The Tigers finished 16-of-33 from the field for 49 percent, which included a 7-of-13 performance from beyond the arc (54 percent). Harrisburg did struggle from the foul line – shooting just 7-of-15.

Brookings went 15-of-41 from the field (37 percent) and 4-of-15 from 3-point land (27 percent), while knocking down 11-of-14 free throws.

Eggebrecht led the ‘Cats with 10 points and five rebounds while Ava Burns added 10 points, three boards and an assist.

Sadie Roth’s 17 points led the Tigers, who improved to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the ESD. Jeniah Ugofsky posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 boards.

Brookings, 2-1 on the season and in conference play, travels to Mitchell on Tuesday to face the Kernels in the Corn Palace.
