Tigers hold off Bobcats, 48-41

BROOKINGS – Huron scored the final eight points to defeat the Bobcats 48-41 in an Eastern South Dakota Conference girls’ basketball matchup Tuesday night at Bob Jostad Gymnasium.

Isabella Shreeve hit a jumper with 1:11 remaining to put the Tigers on top for good at 42-41.

Havyn Heinz, who dropped in a game-high 25 points, went 2-for-2 at the free-throw line with 49 seconds left and again with 20 seconds to play to help seal the deal.

Huron (4-4) shot just 29.8 percent from the field but forced 21 turnovers while committing six.

“I thought Huron came in and they were the tougher team,” said BHS coach Mitch McLagan. “And I think it took us a half to match their toughness, and that’s just too late.

“And then we had 21 turnovers to their six. We just throw so many possessions away, and to think that we had a lead late in the fourth quarter with that many turnovers it’s hard to win basketball games.

“I thought Kennedy Schafer played a heck of a game for us. She got on the glass; she shot it well. But we played scared in the first half and we got ourselves in a big hole.”

The Tigers were up 12-4 after a period and 28-16 at halftime. They scored first out the break to grab a game-high 14-point advantage.

Brookings countered with nine consecutive points – Emily Rystrom bookended the run with a pair of buckets, while Johanna Miller had a putback and Schafer converted from 3-point range – to pull within 30-25.

Later, a Landree Wilson trey cut the deficit to 32-30 heading to the fourth.

The Bobcats kept things going early in the final stanza as Wilson scored to knot things up.

Huron stopped the run with a spurt of its own.

Brooke Schiltz knocked down consecutive jumpers and Heinz canned a 3-ball as the visitors opened up a 39-32 cushion with 5:45 showing on the clock.

Brookings had another answer, which began with Allie Clark making a 3 with 4:10 to play. Regan Weisbeck did the same with 2:41 left.

Following a free throw by Huron’s Tenley Buddenhagen, Wilson connected from the right wing to give the home squad a 41-40 lead with 2:02 remaining.

The Bobcats retook possession with 96 seconds left but came up empty, leading to Shreeve’s go-ahead basket on the other end.

Johanna Miller posted a double-double of 10 points – on 5-of-9 shooting – and 12 rebounds for Brookings. Wilson had 11 points and five boards.

Schafer had six points, six rebounds and three assists.

Brookings (0-8) is host to Harrisburg on Thursday at 7 p.m.
