Tigers pull away from Bobcats in third, win 71-55

BROOKINGS – Huron used a big third quarter to beat the Bobcats 71-55 in a boys’ basketball game Tuesday night at Bob Jostad Gymnasium.

The Tigers put on a three-quarter court press and turned up the intensity in the third, outscoring Brookings 25-6 to turn a four-point deficit into a 54-39 advantage.

Huron made eight of its 15 shot attempts in the period and forced eight turnovers.

“Fundamental basketball got away from us pretty quickly there,” said BHS coach Travis Engebretson. “We started out up four at halftime. In the second half, the first four possessions were turnovers and it was just fundamental stuff – not catching a pass with two hands; dribbling where you can’t dribble against a press; and just a couple of bad decisions in terms of passes.”

Kobe Busch, who had a four-point play in the opening half, and Teegan Evers both scored 24 points in the victory. Evers grabbed nine rebounds and Busch eight.

Brookings built a 33-29 halftime lead on the strength of 55-percent (11-of-20) shooting.

Henry Hammrich scored 13 points and corralled five rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench.

Nick Schefers added nine points and Jonah Dobbs and Trent Broksieck both chipped in with eight.

Brookings (2-16) plays at Watertown in the back end of a doubleheader Friday at 7:30 p.m.
