BROOKINGS – A new T.J. Maxx store is coming to Brookings next spring.
The national apparel and home fashion retailer will be in the former JCPenney location at the University Marketplace, according to information in a news release sent Thursday morning from Legacy Equity Group, which has owned the marketplace since June 2016.
“I think it’s another opportunity for Brookings residents to have a choice in shopping,” James Drew, a member of the equity group, said. “A lot of our retail dollars on apparel seem to go to Sioux Falls and other parts of the region, so for Brookings to have another shopping experience, it’s just good for the community overall.”
Work on preparing the 22,220-square-foot location for T.J. Maxx has just started, Drew said, adding that it’s a relatively straightforward tenant renovation project.
“JCPenney was in that location for over 40 years … and so of course it needs a complete facelift of the location, and with TJ Maxx coming in it gives us an opportunity to upgrade the space and give it a fresh look,” Drew said.
In addition to landing the new T.J. Maxx store, recruitment efforts continue elsewhere on the property as well.
“We’re working with additional retailers to fill the remaining smaller locations at the University Marketplace,” Drew said, noting that T.J. Maxx and Lewis Drug are the marketplace’s anchor tenants.
The project’s construction manager is Clark Drew Construction, according to the release. James Drew added that Legacy Equity Group is comprised of local investors who are Brookings-area residents.
