Twenty-third annual ice show to feature eight princess stories

Twenty-nine skaters from the Brookings Figure Skating Club will present "Princess Stories on Ice" during the 23rd annual ice show at Larson Ice Center this weekend.

The Friday, April 7, performance is at 7 p.m., while the Saturday, April 8, matinee starts at 1 p.m.

Advance tickets are available from club members and at HyVee in Brookings through Thursday.

The discounted tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students K-12. Preschoolers are free. Tickets will also be sold at the door for an additional $2 per ticket. Flowers for the skaters will be available for purchase at the arena before and during the show.

Princess Stories on Ice is a theme that many of the club members have requested for an ice show production.

The performance will feature a cast of 29 skaters, some of whom participate in both hockey and figure skating, ranging from ages 5-18. The show consists of two one-hour acts, including special solo performances by the club's two graduating seniors, Shevy Barber and Bethany Hotchkiss.

"It's been a great season for the skaters, watching them work hard and achieve goals, which will be highlighted during the show,” said Ice Show Director Pam Willis. “I can't wait to see them perform for their family and friends."

Will the ice show be all crowns and gowns?

Not exactly.

Enter Shrek, a big ogre who wants to take the fairy tales back to where they belong, but not without first finding the beautiful Princess Fiona.

Bandits you say?

Well, who else would Rapunzel travel with to the place where the floating lights appear each year on her birthday?

Do I need to be brave to attend?

Not exactly, but you will get to experience the spell cast in Brave by Princess Merida.

What could be more lucky than Aladdin finding a magical lamp? Princess Leia was lucky to be rescued by Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and crew!

Once a princess, always a princess?

After the Russian revolution and even 10 more years, the Grand Duchess Anastasia holds memories of a past filled with palaces and parties.

And then, there is Cinderella who too lived happily with her mother and father until their death, only later to be raised by a wicked stepmother.

As with all good fairy-tales, the show would not be complete without the breaking of an icy spell topped off with the comedy of a snowman named Olaf.

And as they say, you too will live happily ever after, after attending Princess Stories on Ice.
