Man arrested in alleged domestic assault

BROOKINGS – A man was arrested after an altercation with a female, according to Brookings Police.

The incident was reported around 6 p.m. Friday and occurred in the 700 block of Brooklawn Drive, Lt. Marci Gebers said.

Floyd Wakeman, 19, of Brookings was arrested on suspicion of simple assault domestic intimidation.

“Officers learned that Mr. Wakeman had been engaged in an argument with a female who he has had a domestic relationship with. He physically assaulted her by pushing her and covering her mouth, preventing her from screaming,” Gebers said.

“He left the scene prior to officers’ arriving but he was later located and arrested,” Gebers said.

She did not require medical treatment, Gebers added.

Woman arrested in alleged domestic assault

BROOKINGS – A woman was arrested after an altercation with a man, according to Brookings Police.

The incident was reported around 6:30 a.m. Saturday and occurred in the 500 block of 12th Avenue South, Lt. Marci Gebers said.

Grace Vernarski, 20, of Brookings, was arrested on suspicion of simple assault domestic, Gebers said.

“She had physically assaulted a male individual who she’s been in a domestic relationship with. She assaulted him by striking him with an open hand and then a struggle ensued. She was determined to be the predominant aggressor,” Gebers said. 

Vernarski was arrested and transported to the Brookings County Detention Center. 

The male refused medical treatment, Gebers added.
