11 new COVID-19 cases, one new death reported in South Dakota Monday

BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 11 new COVID-19 cases and one new death in South Dakota Monday.

Two of the new cases are in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 3,623 total cases (one new confirmed and one new probable): 3,521 of those people have recovered (one new), with 65 active cases (up by one) and 37 deaths (no change). A total of 12,010 people (six new) have tested negative in Brookings County, and 128 people (no change) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

There are no COVID-19 occupied hospital beds at the Brookings Hospital, the DOH website reported Monday.

Brookings County remains in the “moderate” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 113,596 (11 new – nine confirmed plus two probable) as of midday Monday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 2,067 are classified as active (down by 91 from Sunday). As of Monday, 109,628 people have recovered (97 new), 6,708 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (three new), 67 people are currently hospitalized (down by five) for transmission-based precautions, and 1,901 people have died (one new).

The SDDOH website reports 314,701 people (161 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

The new death is a man in his 70s from Spink County.

The SDDOH website reported midday Monday that 261,885 state-allocated doses of a COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to 169,877 people in South Dakota. Doses administered by Indian Health Services or federal entities are not included in the count.

In Brookings County, 7,575 vaccine doses have been administered to 5,175 people.

The SDDOH reports that 30% of the state population has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine via state and federal allocation.

The figures released by the state Department of Health do not include individuals who are asymptomatic or have symptoms of the coronavirus but are not being tested.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
