36 new COVID-19 cases, nine deaths reported in South Dakota

BROOKINGS – The state on Wednesday reported 36 new COVID-19 cases and nine deaths in South Dakota. 

Two of the new cases have been reported in Brookings County.

The data does not include at-home test results.

Brookings County cases have increased to 8,085 total cases (two new confirmed and probable): 7,948 of those people have recovered (three new) with 86 active cases (down by one) and 51 deaths (no change). A total of 222 people in the county have been hospitalized at some point (no change), the state reported.

The Brookings hospital has no COVID-19 occupied hospital beds, according to the South Dakota Department of Health website. The county is in the “moderate” community spread category. 

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 236,750 (36 new confirmed and probable) as of midday Wednesday, according to the SDDOH.

Of the statewide cases, 2,679 are classified as active (down by 77 from Tuesday). As of Wednesday, 231,201 people have recovered (103 new), 10,665 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (five new), 69 people are currently hospitalized (down by eight) for transmission-based precautions, and 2,870 people with COVID have died (nine new).

The new deaths, three females and six males, are being reported in Beadle, Brown, Charles Mix, Custer, Dewey (2), Hand, Minnehaha and Pennington counties. The age ranges of the deceased are one 0-9 years, one 50-59 years, two 60-69 years, one 70-79 years and four 80 years or older.

The SDDOH website reported midday Wednesday that 1,179,511 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to 518,288 people in South Dakota, as reported to the S.D. Immunization Information System. 

In Brookings County, 46,611 vaccine doses have been administered to 20,334 people, the SDDOH website reports.

The SDDOH reports 71.5% of the state population age 5 and older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine from the state or federal allocation, 58.6% have completed their vaccination series, and 32.5% have received a booster dose.
