Undefeated Rangers beat Lakers, Capitals

The league-leading Rangers won a pair of SDAHA games over the weekend.

Brookings (14-0-1-0) heads to Aberdeen for a game Saturday at 1 p.m. before playing host to Mitchell on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Sunday

• Brookings 5, Watertown 4

WATERTOWN – Trevor Kuechenmeister scored on an assist from Colton Kruse with 10 seconds remaining as the Rangers edged the Lakers.

Brandin Heesch finished with a pair of goals. Kruse added a goal and two assists. Kuechenmeister and Matthew Chapin tallied a goal and an assist apiece.

Brookings got off to a fast start with Kruse lighting the lamp at the 10:38 mark of the first. Akren Prodoehl and Jordan Vlaminck assisted.

Chapin found the back of the net on a power play with 1:49 to go in the period, with the assist going to Kuechenmeister.

The Rangers moved ahead 3-0 via Heesch’s power-play tally a minute into the second. Kruse was credited with the assist.

The Lakers came storming back after that.

Parker Piorkowski netted an unassisted goal with 12:52 to go in the second. Alex Ortmeier scored on a power play off assists from Ben DeVille and Dawsyn Wirkus with 6:13 left. Bubba Spiering’s short-handed tally – assisted by Lukas Eide and DeVille – pulled Watertown even at 3-all with 1:02 to play in the second.

Heesch put Brookings back on top at the 10:21 mark of the third. Chapin and Austin Lesnar assisted.

But Spiering’s second goal again tied things up with 1:54 showing on the clock. Parker Riddle had the assist.

Dylan Geraets made 22 saves to earn the win between the pipes. Robert J. Luken Jr. stopped 30 shots for Watertown (5-9-1-0)

Saturday

• Brookings 4, Oahe 2

BROOKINGS – Colton Kruse tallied a goal and an assist as the Rangers defeated the Capitals.

Jordan Vlaminck got Brookings on the board just 18 seconds into the game. Colton Kruse assisted.

Oahe pulled even on Connor Gerber’s goal, which was assisted by Coleman Varty, midway through the opening period.

Alec Nielson scored on an assist from Matthew Chapin with 16 seconds to go in the first to put the Rangers up 2-1.

The Capitals again pulled even in the second as Varty lit the lamp 20 seconds into the period. Gerber and Zach Fendrich were both credited with assists.

Kruse’s power-play tally with 12:34 remaining in the second put Brookings on top for good. Brandin Heesch assisted.

Trevor Kuechenmeister’s power-play goal – assisted by Heesch – provided for the final margin with 7:18 to go in the game.

Dylan Geraets made 22 saves to earn the win in goal. Brody Hultman stopped 29 shots for Oahe (10-5-1-0).
