United Way, Bobcat Backers host blood drive

BROOKINGS – Brookings Area United Way and Bobcat Backers will host a community blood drive with the American Red Cross from noon-6 p.m. Wednesday at the Outdoor Adventure Center, 2810 22nd Ave. S. in Brookings.

Donors can sign up by visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.

“Brookings Area United Way is committed to fighting for the health, education and financial stability for every resident in the county. This is one way we can help to strengthen our community and help meet hospital and patient needs,” Brookings Area United Way Executive Director Heidi Gullickson said. “We are excited to partner again with the Bobcat Backers to host this blood drive and to bring awareness to the ongoing need of blood donations. The Brookings Area United Way not only works to raise funds to help our community, but we look for other ways we can create impact and get others involved.”

Blood is a perishable product that can only come from volunteer blood donors. With someone in the U.S. needing blood every two seconds, blood products must be constantly replenished, according to the Red Cross.

“We urge community members to donate blood and help ensure that patients in local hospitals have a supply of blood ready and waiting before an emergency occurs. There’s no better feeling than knowing that your blood donation may give someone a second chance at life.”
