BROOKINGS – An SUV hit Casey’s General Store after its driver had a medical issue, resulting in a Casey’s employee being taken to the hospital, according to the Brookings Police.

The incident happened about 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Casey’s in the 100 block of Sixth Street West, Assistant Chief Derrick Powers said.

Carol Smith, 59, of Elkton, was driving a 2002 Ford Explorer.

“She was pulling into the parking lot. She had some sort of medical issue, it appears, which resulted in her hitting the building,” Powers said.

A Casey’s employee “was actually knocked over,” Powers said.

The employee was transported by ambulance to the Brookings hospital with unknown injuries, he said.

“The driver of the vehicle, she refused treatment by the ambulance service, but it appeared that she may be getting that on her own,” Powers said.

He did not have a damage estimate for either the building or the vehicle but did say the Explorer was not towed.

Powers said Smith was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol and no charges are pending.
