BROOKINGS – Three juveniles were taken into custody by the Brookings Police Department following a vehicle pursuit early Sunday that ended with the vehicle catching fire.

According to a police blotter report and Sgt. Joel Perry with the BPD, the vehicle was traveling on Main Avenue at 12:46 a.m., where it failed to yield to pedestrians, who had to take steps to avoid being struck. An officer with the BPD witnessed the incident and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

Perry said the vehicle did not stop for the officer and went westbound out of Brookings and into the county, where it eventually entered a ditch and started on fire. The three juvenile occupants in the vehicle were able to get out and were not hurt. Perry said the driver is facing multiple charges.

The BPD, South Dakota State University Police Department and South Dakota Highway Patrol assisted in the incident, Perry said, adding that a full report has yet to be completed.
