The Brookings VFW Auxiliary No. 2118 recently had the opportunity to  host a visit from National VFW Auxiliary President Jean Hamil from  Florida.

Showcasing our city and community was achieved through the efforts and cooperation of local places of interest. The South Dakota Children’s Museum, The Little Quilt Shop and the Brookings County Historical Museum were highlights of the tour. President Hamil and VFW auxiliary members from across the state were treated to guided tours and background information for each locale.

The time and personal interaction from each location visited was much appreciated by everyone. The positive responses along with purchases made will remind visitors of what Brookings has to offer.

Along with places of interest around Brookings, we introduced the VFW guests to family food fare at the Valley Restaurant in Volga, the Dairy Bar on SDSU campus and Nick’s Hamburgers. The Comfort Suites University motel provided excellent accommodations for everyone attending the event. Rave reviews all around.

Thank you to SDSU President Barry Dunn,, the Military ROTC Air Force and Army Departments, lieutenant colonels to cadets, for their aid and assistance in planning and setting up the Medal of Honor Garden for the Quilt of Valor presentations. The Brookings Area Quilt Guild provided six Quilts of Valor for presentation to six veterans selected by SDSU military members including Russ Chavez and Connie Johnson from the SDSU Veterans Services Office.

It was an honor to have our National VFW Auxiliary president in Brookings; it was an equal honor to have met and worked with all the men and women that made this event a success.

Thank you from the Brookings VFW Auxiliary No. 2118 members and VFW Auxiliary Department President Wanda Mix, Brookings.
