BROOKINGS – A report of a stranger trying to lure a boy into his van was a false report, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

“Through further investigation, it has been determined that the incident reported on Tuesday the 14th of February, near the Volga school, didn’t happen and that it was a false report,” said Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring in a release Thursday afternoon.

The original report was filed at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday by the parents of a 12-year-old boy who said he had been approached by a man in a black van near the Sioux Valley School in Volga about 20 minutes earlier.

The boy claimed the man said the boy’s father had asked him to pick him up from school, but the boy ran away because he did not recognize the man or the van, Sebring said in the initial report.
