BROOKINGS – Watertown had two more dominant performances Saturday at Bob Shelden Field to finish with a 4-0 record in the ‘Chutes Junior Legion Baseball Tournament.

Watertown goes 4-0; Brookings beats Aberdeen 2-1 in finale

BROOKINGS – Watertown had two more dominant performances Saturday at Bob Shelden Field to finish with a 4-0 record in the ‘Chutes Junior Legion Baseball Tournament.

Post 17 (20-3) outscored its opponents a combined 67-17, needing just 20 innings to win the four games.

The Rapid City Post 22 Bullets (33-6) finished with a 3-1 mark. Pierre (9-17) went 2-2, host Brookings (6-18) was 1-3 and Aberdeen (4-16) ended up 0-4.

The ‘Chutes beat the Smittys 2-1 to close out the tourney Saturday night.

Brookings plays host to Aberdeen in a doubleheader Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Jacob Schoon finished 3-for-4, including a walkoff single with two outs in the seventh, and Parker Rykhus pitched a four-hitter as the ‘Chutes won their tournament finale.

Brookings found the scoreboard first, pushing across a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Brock Luze singled with two outs and stole second, before scoring on an error on a batted ball by Trevor Berreth.

Post 24 scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh to knot the score at 1-all as Jackson Rohlfs reached on a one-out error, moved to third on another error and sprinted home on Carson Simes’ RBI single.

In the bottom of the seventh, Luze drew a one-out base on balls and Kane Kurtenbach walked with two away to set the stage for Schoon, who lifted a 2-2 pitch to left field to drive in the winning run.

Rykhus allowed just one run – unearned. He struck out three batters and walked one.

Tanner Shepardson doubled and Christian Mediger singled for the ‘Chutes.

Tannor Merkel took the loss, giving up two runs – one earned – on six hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts.

Aberdeen’s Brandon Fauth went 2-for-4 and Gavin Heier added a hit.

Matt Lusk tossed a five-hitter, and Post 8 moved ahead 7-1 with four runs in the third inning and three in the fourth.

Lusk allowed just one run. He struck out five batters and did not issue a walk.

Brookings’ Trevor Berreth led off the bottom of the first with a single. He moved to second on a groundout and scored on Parker Rykhus’ two-out single to give the ‘Chutes an early 1-0 lead.

Pierre’s Andrew Coverdale had a two-run single in the top of the third. Cade Hinkle, who reached on a catcher’s interference call, scampered home on an error. Alex Badger’s groundout plated courtesy runner Josh Rowse to push the margin to 4-1.

In the fourth, Lusk had an RBI single and Maquire Raske chipped in with a two-run hit to put Post 8 on top 7-1.

Tom Erickson rounded out the scoring with an RBI single in the seventh.

Erickson, Cade Hinkle, Rowse and Cobey Carr each scored twice in the victory. Badger and Carr both added a hit.

The ‘Chutes’ Christian Mediger finished 2-for-3. Tanner Shepardson had the other hit.

Mediger gave up seven runs – three earned – on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings in the loss. Theo Burns tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and three walks. Kane Kurtenbach pitched the seventh, surrendering one run on one hit and two walks.

Post 17 raced out to a 11-0 lead after four innings in what proved to be the championship game in the round-robin tournament.

Parker Schmidt went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored.

Brandon Florey also finished 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Dawsyn Wirkus was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a pair of runs.

Nathan Gonnelly tripled, drove in a run and scored four times.

Sully Mack, who tallied two RBIs, and Matthew Glines both doubled.

Cooper Heiser pitched a two-hitter to earn the win. He gave up three runs – none earned – with two strikeouts and two walks.

The Bullets’ Blake Weaver had the team’s lone RBI. Jeremy Wiedmann and Bridger Nesbit both singled.

True Synhorst took the loss after surrendering nine runs – six earned – on five hits and eight walks with three strikeouts in two-plus innings.

Post 17 scored 17 runs in the top of the sixth to turn an 11-6 deficit into a run-rule shortened victory.

Watertown scored four runs in the top of the third, but Aberdeen scored nine times in the bottom of the third and two in the fourth to move ahead 11-4. Watertown had two runs in the fifth, before really getting things going in the sixth.

Sully Mack hit a grand slam. He finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs and four runs scored.

Dawsyn Wirkus went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs. Tucker Wookey was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs.

Jayden Cordell and Mason Morris both totaled one hit and three RBIs. Brandon Florey tallied three RBIs and scored twice

Parker Schmidt had a double, a single, two RBIs and two runs. Nathan Gonnelly notched two hits and four runs scored. Matthew Glines contributed two hits, an RBI and two runs.

Schmidt earned the pitching win in relief of Wookey, giving up two runs – zero earned – on three hits and a walk with four strikeouts over the final 3 1/3 innings.

Aberdeen’s Isaac VanOrman, Jackson Rohlfs and Tannor Merkel each had two hits and two RBIs. Rohlfs and Merkel doubled.

Cole Sippel doubled and drove in two runs.

Gavin Heier, Sippel, Tygan Holtey and Merkel each scored twice.

Sippel, the second of four Post 24 pitchers, took the loss after surrendering 10 runs – nine earned – on six hits and two walks without recording an out. He took over on the mound to begin the sixth.

The Bullets scored three runs in the top of the eighth to pull out the victory.

Colton Hartford had an RBI single with one out to make it 8-7 and Brayden Burrus added a run-scoring hit with two away. Bridger Nesbit, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a wild pitch to provide for the final margin.

Burrus finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Jake Goble had a triple and a pair of RBIs. Nesbit doubled and drove in two runs. Hartford scored three times. Jace Oldham had the team’s other RBI.

JT Kostenbauer pitched four innings in relief to earn the win, giving up one run – unearned – on three hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts. Starter Troy Wilhelm allowed six runs – just one earned – on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

Pierre’s Maguire Raske went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Andrew Coverdale contributed two RBIs, while Grant Judson and AJ Goden added one apiece. Judson scored twice.

AJ Goden gave up three runs on two hits and a walk in one inning to take the loss.
