Welcome back, Brookings, SDSU students!

BROOKINGS – Friday was the first day of classes for most Brookings School District students as well as move-in day for new students at South Dakota State University.

At Camelot Intermediate School, shown above, teachers gathered down the main hallway holding flags above the new and returning fourth- and fifth-graders as several SDSU band students performed their “heralding” cadence.

SDSU students Noelle Allerdings, Julia Okerman and William Reynolds are shown performing on their fanfare trumpets welcoming the Camelot students.

Band teacher Mary Cogswell said the staff and faculty of Camelot always enjoy being a part of the Camelot tradition of welcoming in students.

Below, Camelot students also burned some energy on the playground before classes started Friday morning.

At Ben Reifel Hall on SDSU’s campus, the Math Mentors of the new Jacks Leap Program were helping out any and all students moving into the residence hall.

All sorts of items were being brought into the halls: futons, microwaves, TVs, gaming systems, musical instruments and even boxes of ramen noodles.

“We’re a new program at SDSU,” Math Mentor Nick Brown said. “The Jacks Leap Program offers free tutoring for all subjects, we just happen to be the group that helps out with mathematics.”

The Math Mentors of the Jacks Leap Program also helping out Friday morning were Daria Yahovleva, Mary Hendricks, Elyse Owen and Jayni Anderson.
