BHS actors to bring classic ‘Peter/Wendy’ to the stage

BROOKINGS – Children and adults will all have something to enjoy in the upcoming Brookings High School play, “Peter/Wendy,” to be held at 7 p.m. April 6-8 at the school.

According to co-director and BHS English teacher Thomas Moudry, this play is a reinterpretation of the classic Peter Pan story more true to the original story by J.M. Barrie rather than the Disney film.

This Peter Pan is treated more like a mythical character, a living symbol of youth, with the play showing the value of youthfulness and why growing up is difficult.

Among Moudry’s favorite scenes is when Peter Pan talks Wendy into joining him in Neverland, and he said Captain Hook and Mr. Smee are as hilarious as ever. So, even if it is a more serious interpretation, it will still be fun for the family for upper elementary kids on up, Moudry said.

Twenty-eight student-actors are in the play, with a hard-working crew making the performance possible, from those working the lighting to the sound to the stage.

The students have collaborated with the two directors, Moudry and Carrie Oorlog, and have been able to inject their creativity and heart into this play just as much as the directors.

“I think we’ve got great young actors, we’ve got a great crew behind the scenes and in the booth,” Moudry encouraged. “Come in and see what these kids can do.”

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and activity passes are accepted.
