BROOKINGS – The intersection of Rio Grande Avenue and 20th Street South was closed starting Monday so crews can work on the western end of the 20th Street South project.

The work on the west end of the project is the last phase and is anticipated to take approximately four to six weeks to complete, depending on weather. Signs will be installed along the detour routes to inform traffic, and the detour map is shown on page 2.

During the past week, crews paved the bottom layers of asphalt on 20th Street South between Rio Grande Avenue and Larkspur Ridge Drive. The contractors are also installing sidewalk, topsoil and seeding on many areas of the project.

“The contractors are working diligently to open 20th Street South to traffic in August. The final seeding and clean-up work are scheduled to be completed by October 2020 or earlier if weather is favorable,” according to a City of Brookings press release.

“We would like to remind the public to be cautious when driving or walking through the project area, especially around work areas under construction.”

Questions may be directed to Cory Mackendanz, project inspector, at 320-295-6967 or the City Engineering Department at 692-6629.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience during the project, and we are looking forward to the reconstructed 20th Street South roadway,” the press release says.
