BROOKINGS – Speed doesn’t win the Prairie Striders Predictor Mile, but this year speed and accurate predictions went hand-in-hand.
The winner of the Aug. 3 event at Brookings High School track was Ayub Kassim, a member of the South Dakota State cross country team. The junior from Eden Prairie, Minn., predicted a 5:05 mile and ran it in 5:01.5. Tim Fryer, of Hendricks, Minn., was second, predicting 5:30 and running 5:36.2. Third place went to Ben Vukovich, of Brookings, who ran a 5:24.2 after predicting 5:40.
In the children’s division, Jonathan Moe was spot-on with his prediction for the 400-meter run – predicting 1:48 and running 1:48.1. In the 800-meter run, Ava Crooks predicted 4:12 and ran a 4:09.7.
