Wirebaugh, Golden Eagles win ESD titles; Piearson ties for third

BRANDON – Sydney Wirebaugh earned medalist honors and led Aberdeen Central to the team title during the Eastern South Dakota Conference Girls’ Golf Tournament on Tuesday at the 5,153-yard, par-71 Brandon Golf Course.

The Golden Eagles shot a team score of 341.

Host Brandon Valley was second with a 355 and Yankton finished third at 365.

Pierre (368), Watertown (383), Harrisburg (391), Huron (395) and Mitchell were fourth through eighth, respectively.

Brookings ended up ninth with a 415 total.

Wirebaugh, a junior, fired a 7-over-par 78 for a two-stroke victory.

The Lynx’s Liz Duncan was runner-up following a round of 80.

Bobcat senior Brooke Piearson carded an 87 while finishing in a tie for third with the Gazelles’ Josie Krajewski and the Golden Eagles’ Brooklyn Hofer.

Piearson also tied for third a year ago after placing second as both a sophomore and freshman.

Completing Aberdeen Central’s team score, Camryn Wipf and Danielle Podoll both shot 88 to end up in a tie for sixth with Yankton’s Peyton Tramp.

The Arrows’ Holland Crocker (89) was ninth and the Lady Govs’ Shelby Guthrie (90) placed 10th.

Aberdeen Central’s Cassidy Gough, Brandon Valley’s Tanna Lehfeldt and Julia Andresen, Pierre’s Hallie Gronlund and Mitchell’s Ashley Zimmer tied for 11th with matching 91s.

Huron’s Jayda Shillingstad (92) was 16th.

Ashlea Wolfe rounded out the Lynx’s team tally with a 93, putting her in a tie for 17th with Aberdeen Central’s Mikayla Santjer and Pierre’s Annabelle Simpson.

Pierre’s Taylor Davis (94) came in in 20th.

Brookings’ Nicole Steen shot 100 to finish in a tie for 34th.

Shaylee Kuehl’s 104 put her in a tie for 39th. Macey Fields rounded out the team score with a 124 as she took 48th.

Ashton Austreim added a 126 to finish 49th.

The season concludes with the Class AA State Girls’ Golf Tournament on Monday and Tuesday at Broadland Creek in Huron.

Piearson has played in the past five state tournaments, finishing 11th at Lakeview in Mitchell as a junior in 2016 and 10th at Meadowbrook in Rapid City as a sophomore in 2015.

Piearson also led the squad in 2014, tying for 24th. She tied for 67th as an eighth-grader in 2013 and tied for 74th as a seventh-grader the year before.
