BROOKINGS – A woman was arrested Thursday night and charged with aggravated assault domestic for allegedly threatening a man with a knife, according to Brookings Police.

The incident was reported at 11:40 p.m. Thursday and occurred in the 1000 block of Yorktown Drive, Lt. Marci Gebers said.

“Upon arrival, officers made contact with the female party, who was later determined to be the predominant aggressor and she was arrested for aggravated assault domestic,” Gebers said.

Arrested was Hymalay Viera, 26, of Brookings.

“Through the course of the investigation, officers were able to speak with both the arrestee and the male victim, who is a 29-year-old Brookings resident,” Gebers said.

Viera and the man were known to each other, she added.

“They learned that there was a verbal argument which turned into a physical altercation and then Hymalay brandished a knife and was pointing it at the male victim,” Gebers said.

“Both had minor injuries that did not require medical treatment,” she added.

Viera was placed under arrest and transported to the Brookings County Detention Center, Gebers said.
