A woman died in a Wednesday morning crash near Mile Marker 132, about 1 mile south of Brookings, on Interstate 29.
The accident, which occurred at 10:51 a.m., involved a Mack tractor-trailer with a tanker and a 2020 Chevy Equinox. The tractor-trailer rear-ended the car and wound up on the railroad tracks passing beneath I-29, Tony Mangan with the South Dakota Department of Public Safety said in a news release Wednesday night. The car was pushed into the east ditch.
The 40-year-old female driver of the Equinox was pronounced dead at the scene and the 39-year-old male driver of the tractor-trailer sustained serious non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Brookings Health System, Mangan said. Agencies responding to the crash were Brookings Fire Department, Brookings Police Department and the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
The Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. More details will be released later.
