BROOKINGS – Season tickets for Woodbine Productions’ concert series go on sale Tuesday, marking 10 years since an anonymous donor, the SDSU Foundation and SDSU Music Department began the unique partnership.

The 2017-18 season offers three concerts with the finest vocal jazz, a cappella, rhythm and blues, gospel and Broadway musicians coming to Brookings.

The Manhattan Transfer, Take 6, and Leslie Odom, Jr., will all take the Performing Arts Center stage within the next nine months.

The Manhattan Transfer

On Sept. 12, The Manhattan Transfer celebrates its 45th anniversary in Brookings.

The Manhattan Transfer remains a cornerstone for great pop and jazz hits, a legacy that the group has cemented since its first recording in 1972. The quartet has been awarded 10 Grammy Awards of 20 nominations and has been inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.

Trist Curless has now officially become a member of the group, joining Janis Siegel, Alan Paul and Cheryl Bentyne, all of whom are conscious of maintaining the integrity and artistry left by founding member Tim Hauser, who died in 2014.

With sold-out world tours and worldwide record sales in the millions, The Manhattan Transfer returns to the U.S. to celebrate 45 years of bringing unique and extraordinarily infused vocal magic to generations of fans.

Take 6

On Oct. 17, Take 6 celebrates its 25th anniversary with a show in Brookings.

Take 6 features Claude McKnight, Mark Kibble, Joel Kibble, Dave Thomas, Alvin Chea and Khristian Dentley. It’s the most awarded vocal group in history, with 10 Grammy Awards, 10 Dove Awards, a Soul Train Award and more.

Heralded by Quincy Jones as the “baddest vocal cats on the planet,” Take 6 is the quintessential a cappella group and model for vocal genius. Six virtuosic voices united in crystal clear harmony, against a backdrop of syncopated rhythms, innovative arrangements and funky grooves that bubble into an intoxicating brew of gospel, jazz, R&B and pop. The multi-platinum selling sextet has toured across the globe, collaborated across genres and is coming to South Dakota for the first time and its only performance in Brookings.

Leslie Odom, Jr.

Bringing a welcome winter thaw and a remarkable musical coup, Woodbine brings Leslie Odom, Jr., to Brookings on April 17, 2018.

The multi-faceted performer completed his run on Broadway starring as Aaron Burr in the original cast of the blockbuster hit musical “Hamilton,” a role that earned him the 2016 Tony Award for Lead Actor in a Musical.

He is also a Grammy Award-winner as a principal soloist on Hamilton’s Original Broadway Cast Recording, which won the 2016 award for Best Musical Theater Album.

His solo debut album has recently been released, and it’s No. 1 on the iTunes Jazz charts.

History of Woodbine

It was early 2008 when Woodbine Productions sprang to life from an anonymous donor who came up with the idea of bringing “world-famous or about to be” musicians to Brookings.

“We had an individual approach the Foundation and Music Department with the suggestion that it would be great for the students, Brookings and the greater region if we were able to bring some of the world’s finest musicians to campus,” shared David Reynolds, director of the SDSU School of Performing Arts.

“The most unique part of the idea was that the donor offered to cover all the expenses for the shows and that we would be able to keep all the ticket sales to award to students as music scholarships. Not only do students receive financial benefit, select students meet the visiting musicians, and they get to attend performances on campus.”

Season tickets offer early reserved seats and will be sold at the SDSU Performing Arts Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday. After Tuesday, tickets are available through the Music Department. Single tickets for the individual shows will be available at a later date.

Ticket prices vary per show and by seating section, ranging from $25-$45 apiece. Season ticket orders save $5 off the season package. All shows start at 7:30 p.m. For more information, follow Woodbine Productions on Facebook page or call the SDSU School of Performing Arts at 605-688-5188.
