Yankton advances to title game; Cubs eliminated by Renner

MITCHELL – Yankton blanked the Sioux Falls Brewers 3-0 on Friday at Cadwell Park to advance to the championship game of the Class A State Amateur Baseball Tournament.

Renner topped the Cubs 12-2 in seven innings and the Sioux Falls Flying Squirrels edged Sturgis 6-5 in elimination games at Drake Field.

The Monarchs and Flying Squirrels play today at 11 a.m. The winner faces the Sioux Falls Brewers at 5:30 p.m. with a spot in the title game on the line.

The final is Sunday at noon.

Beau Lofink spun a four-hit shutout, striking out five batters and walking a pair, for the Tappers.

He threw 122 pitches.

Yankton’s Gabe Leon and Mitch Gullikson both collected a pair of hits.

Leon singled with two away in the third frame and moved to second on an error. Derrick Nelson came through with an RBI hit to open the scoring.

In the fifth, Gullikson stroked a one-out double and scored on Leon’s two-out single to make it 2-0.

Nik Davis reached on an error to get the ninth underway. He moved to second on Alex Mueller’s sacrifice, took third on Gullikson’s single and scored on a Mack Hollingsworth sacrifice fly.

Jeremiah Mauch suffered the loss on the mound after allowing two runs – one earned – on six hits with six strikeouts and a walk in six innings.

Jose Martinez was 2-for-4.

One of the Tappers’ three runs in the game was earned.

 Renner 12, Brookings 2 (7 inn.)

Kris Regas tossed five shutout innings and David Borchardt blasted a three-run homer during the Monarchs’ seven-run fifth frame.

Regas allowed five hits while striking out six and walking three. He threw 77 pitches.

Renner found the scoreboard in the top of the third as Edward Reichenbach doubled, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Chaz Palmer’s sacrifice fly.

Corey Vasquez and Erik DeJong were hit by pitches to open the fourth. Both advanced on a passed ball, before Tim Huber recorded a run-scoring hit to make it 2-0.

Palmer led off the big fifth with a single and Grant Hieb and Brian McGuire both walked.

Vasquez and DeJong stroked back-to-back RBI singles. Huber walked.

Borchardt stepped into the batter’s box next and, after taking a strike, drove a pitch to right field for a three-run shot that made it 9-0.

Renner added a three-spot in the sixth.

McGuire and Huber sandwiched walks around DeJong’s double to load the bases with one out.

Reichenbach’s two-out walk forced in McGuire. DeJong scored on a wild pitch and, after Andy Moe drew a base on balls, Palmer tallied an RBI hit to push the margin to 12-0.

DeJong and Palmer both finished with two hits and a pair of RBIs. Vasquez drove in two runs.

The Cubs scored twice in the bottom of the seventh.

Jacolby Anderson was hit by a pitch and Seth Fraser reached on an error.

Kyle Krogman came through with an RBI hit. Jared Tschetter singled with one away. Following a strikeout, Fraser scored on a wild pitch. A groundout ended the game.

Brookings’ Todd Standish was 2-for-4 with a double. Austin Koenig had the team’s other hit.

Marcus Heemstra took the loss after surrendering seven runs on six hits with three strikeouts and a trio of walks in four-plus innings.

Fraser gave up five runs on two hits and four walks with a pair of strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. Krogman tossed the final 1 1/3, allowing two hits and a walk.

 Sioux Falls Flying Squirrels 6, Sturgis 5

Austin Serck threw 8 1/3 innings and the Flying Squirrels took advantage of seven A’s errors to pick up the victory.

Serck allowed five runs on six hits and nine walks with six strikeouts.

Just one of Sioux Falls’ six runs was earned.

The Flying Squirrels’ Seth Bjordahl and Seth Peterson reached on errors to open the game. Tyler Fields followed with an RBI double.

Sturgis pulled even in the bottom of the first. Parks Brigman and Jesse Kurtenbach drew one-out walks. Dawson Penticoff had a two-out RBI single.

Sioux Falls took the lead for good in the second.

Reece Mimmack was hit by a pitch and Bjordahl singled. Mimmack scored on an error.

In the fourth, Raymond Williams reached on an error and Serck singled. Mimmack and Bjordahl stroked RBI singles with one away to make it 4-1.

Jaden Holzer liked the first pitch of the fifth inning, connecting for a home run to left field to put the Flying Squirrels ahead 5-1.

Sturgis got one-out walks from Adam Denek and Brigman in the bottom of the fifth. Tyson Lindekugel came through with a two-run double to center to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Cody Schulze singled in the sixth. Zac Smith stroked an RBI double to pull the A’s within 5-4.

Holzer reached via a two-out error in the seventh. Damon Baruth’s RBI single put the Flying Squirrels on top 6-4.

Kurtenbach blasted the first pitch he saw out of the park with one out in the ninth to again pull Sturgis within a run.

Lindekugel grounded out after that. Penticoff singled; however, Schulze flew out to left to end it.

Bjordahl finished 3-for-5, while Fields doubled twice and Peterson and Baruth both added a pair of singles.

Peterson was credited with the save.

For the A’s, Lindekugel and Penticoff totaled two hits apiece.

Kurtenbach took the loss on the mound after allowing two runs – none earned – on three hits with a pair of strikeouts in two innings. Smith gave up four runs – one earned – on seven hits with six strikeouts over the next five frames. Penticoff struck out four and walked one while surrendering two hits over the final two innings.
