BROOKINGS – Sioux Falls author and journalist Dana Yost will introduce his first novel, “Before I Get Old,” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, at the Brookings Public Library.

This event will be presented both in person in the library’s Cooper Room and virtually on Zoom. The link and login information for this event can be found on the library’s website or Facebook page.

What if you had to choose between following your dreams or following your duty to place and people? What if you ended up choosing duty, can you still find happiness? That is the underlying theme of “Before I Get Old,” a novel of difficult choices set in southwestern Minnesota, eastern South Dakota, and Door County, Wisconsin, in the 1930s and 1950s. A young man has to choose between staying on drought-ridden farmland of the mid-1930s or working on a Lake Michigan pleasure yacht captained by his uncle. What will he do?

Yost was an award-winning daily newspaper journalist for 29 years. Since 2008, he has published eight books – some history, some poetry and some essay. This is his first novel. His book, “In Your Head,” won the South Dakota State Poetry Society’s annual chapbook award in 2020. He has lived his entire life in the rural Midwest and has lived in Sioux Falls since late 2019.
