Young artist earns honor

Ailish Crinion, age 9, has won third place at the national level of the Optimist Visual Arts Contest sponsored by Optimist International.

She submitted a work in the painting category on the topic “Imagine Being an Optimist.”

She used stippling and sgraffito with oil pastels for the front image. The background is a graded wash and color-on-color watercolor.

Her art is all about girl power. Her art teacher was Jennifer Moser. Her influence came from two parts of the Optimist creed, namely “Promise yourself to be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind,” and “Promise yourself to wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.”

She is pictured with her winning piece, a check for $100 and her nominator, Betty L. Beer, of the Brookings Optimist Club.
