BROOKINGS – Jason Zimmerman will become the College of Arts and Sciences interim dean, Dennis Hedge, provost and vice president of academic affairs at South Dakota State University, has announced.

Zimmerman, who became the college’s associate dean in June 2016, takes over for Dennis Papini, who will become the vice chancellor for academic affairs and provost at the University of Illinois at Springfield July 1.

“I want to thank Jason for taking on this leadership role during a time of transition,” Hedge said. “Dr. Zimmerman is committed to providing students with the best possible educational experience in and out of the classroom and leading the college in a direction that will continue to create opportunities and new growth. The College of Arts and Sciences attracts students from around the world and provides new and unique pathways for them to pursue their dreams and goals in life. I look forward to working with Jason in this interim role.”

As associate dean, Zimmerman has spent the past year overseeing the college’s academic programs, guiding all undergraduate and graduate curriculum and program changes, working to facilitate accreditation and re-accreditation efforts, and providing oversight for all student academic matters as well as student recruitment and services.

Zimmerman has been an SDSU faculty member since joining the Department of Economics in 1999. He has also been the interim director of the Ness Division of Management and Economics. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Wabash College and his master’s and doctorate from Purdue University.

“I am excited to take on this new opportunity and continue to advance the College of Arts and Sciences,” Zimmerman said. “Our college houses a broad mix of faculty and students from many different disciplines, which makes for a highly engaging academic environment. It is a privilege to work with our faculty and other campus leaders to further strengthen the humanities, natural sciences and social sciences at SDSU.”

A national search for a permanent dean will begin in the coming months.
