On Wednesday at approximately 1:07 p.m., the Brookings Fire Department responded to a blaze in a shelterbelt along 16th Avenue West with three brush trucks and 17 firefighters.

BROOKINGS – The Rita and Alex Hillman Foundation recently announced the award of five grants, $50,000 each, that will support bold, early-stage interventions designed to improve the health and health care of marginalized populations. Among those grantees are South Dakota State University’s Mary Isaacson, an associate professor in the College of Nursing, and Tiara Ruff, a mentor in the College of Nursing’s Native American Nursing Education Center.

On Oct. 8, the 727/DAV Annual Charity Poker Run Committee, along with Rolling Thunder Inc. South Dakota Chapter 2, presented a check for $47,000 to the Disabled American Veterans Hospital Transportation Network.

BROOKINGS – Jessica Drum recently joined the Department of Animal Science at South Dakota State University as an assistant professor and SDSU Extension beef reproductive physiology specialist. Drum will focus on reproduction research within the beef cattle industry and share her knowledge through SDSU Extension programs and teaching.

Brookings Mayor Oepke “Ope” Niemeyer signs a mayoral proclamation to recognize October 2022 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Carolyn Groves, executive assistant at the Brookings Domestic Abuse Shelter, was present at the signing.
