Allan Jones, 80, passed away on Monday, March 24, 2025, at Peaceful Pines Senior Living in Brookings, SD.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings, SD. A visitation will be held the night prior from 5 to 6:45 p.m. with a Masonic Lodge Service at 6:45 p.m. on Friday, March 28, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings.
Allan Rudy Jones was born on June 10, 1944, in Volga, SD, to Stephen and Ruby (Finnie) Jones. He spent his elementary years in Brookings and Vermillion. The family permanently moved to Brookings when Allan was in the 6th grade, where he attended school in Brookings until receiving his bachelor’s degree in music education in 1964 from SDSU. He left for Colorado to complete his master’s degree at the University of Northern Colorado in Greely. Allan completed his education journey in 1999, receiving his Doctor of Education at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.
During his time at South Dakota State University, he was active in ROTC and Army Ranger training, launching his military career, which he continued after graduating and attending basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. Allan then went on in his military career to Ft. Sheridan for officer training school, eventually retiring as a Captain in 1969. After retiring from the military, Allan and his wife and their newborn son moved to several states, including Colorado, Oklahoma, Missouri, and finally, South Dakota, where he and Marjorie raised their two children, Scott and Susan in Vermillion. Allan and his family lived in Vermillion, running the local music store he purchased in 1977 until 1983 when he closed the store and began work in Yankton for AB Business products. Allan had been involved with USD in multiple capacities, from theater to video and audio production, and eventually worked in the internet technologies department.
Allan’s first wife passed away from complications of ALS in 1998, and shortly after, he moved back to what he considered his home in Brookings, SD, where he was the director of IT at SDSU until retiring in 2005.
Allan met Ranny Boomsma Knutson in 1999 marrying her in March 2000. With this union he gained a daughter, Kimberly, and her family, who have been an integral part of his life since. Allan and Ranny spent the next 25 years together enjoying their retirement, traveling, spending time with the church, family, and enjoying many hobbies together.
Survivors include his wife, Ranny; a son and his wife, Scott (Amy) Jones of Sioux Falls, and their five children, Elizabeth, Adriauna, Ethan, Marlee, and William; a daughter and her husband, Kimberly (Jason) Boeve of Brookings, and their three sons Tyson (Ava) and baby Maya, Taylor, and Tanner; a daughter, Susan of Omaha, and her seven children; and many great-grandchildren.
Allan was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Ruby (Finnie), his infant son Derrick, his brother Lee, his first wife Marjorie, three brothers-in-law, four sisters-in-law, and two nephews.
