ELKTON — A vehicle that passed a school bus with its lights activated is being sought by authorities in Brookings County.
The incident occurred Thursday on state Highway 13 near 215th Street north of Elkton, and was reported at 3:53 p.m., according to a Monday news release from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
The bus was carrying students from the Elkton School District. None of the youngsters were exiting the bus at the moment the vehicle — a black Ford SUV with a partial license plate of 6JD, according to the bus driver — passed the bus, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring said in a Monday phone call with the Brookings Register.
The sheriff’s office is seeking assistance from anyone who may know who was driving a vehicle matching the description given at that time. Passing a school bus with its light activated is a Class 2 misdemeanor, which the sheriff’s office routinely cites offenders.
Thursday’s incident is being investigated by the sheriff’s office. Anyone with any information can call 605-696-8300 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously by visiting www.brookingsareacrimestoppers.com or by calling 605-692-STOP (7867).
