Betty Nelson, 90, of Flandreau, SD, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2025, at Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Flandreau, SD. Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 29, at Skroch Funeral Chapel.
Betty Nelson has prepared herself for the entrance into heaven. She has received God into her heart. The power of Faith, Hope, and Love of God to open the door to her heart and make a path to our hearts for the Lord.
Her life’s journey of 90 years came to a peaceful end on Sept. 25, 2025, at Edgewood Assisted Living in Flandreau.
Betty was a daughter of Ralph and Anna (Peterson) Johnson, who was born May 11, 1935, at Brookings Hospital in Brookings, S.D., the first of two girls. She received her education at Sterling Country School, half a mile up the road from the farm. She skipped a grade because she was so smart. Then she went to high school in Brookings and graduated in 1953.
After high school, she worked at the Brookings Courthouse and had her first child. She married a year later to her high school sweetheart, Roger Nelson. Her journey had then begun. Moving to Vermillion, Roger went to college and played for the Coyotes Basketball team. Their next move was to Hartley, Iowa, where he taught, coached, and had principal duties. They then moved back to Vermillion, then Colman, Pierre, Hartford, and finally to live with family in Flandreau. Their own family had grown to five children.
Betty was a true and faithful partner and mother of five children, keeping up with their activities and sports events. She did some activities herself like ceramics, playing cards with the gals, bowling, and of course sports, along with her cooking and baking.
Betty was survived by her five children; Patricia Entringer, Colman, Peggy (Mike) Fargen, Flandreau, Terry (Cindi) Nelson, Britton, Timothy (Elizabeth) Nelson, Sioux Falls, and Tommy (Trish) Nelson, Brookings; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sister, Erma (James) Christopherson; many nieces and nephews; plus, friends and anyone who showed up for supper. All friends were always welcomed at the Nelson home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Nelson; her son-in-law, Mike Entringer; her parents, Ralph and Anna (Peterson) Johnson; and her in-laws, Arthur and Carrie (Swenson) Nelson.
Our Angel is looking over us all now...
