The Brookings softball team made quick work of Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Thursday evening as the Bobcats beat the Rough Riders 12-1 in five innings.

Bobcat softball routs Rough Riders, 12-1

BROOKINGS — The Brookings softball team made quick work of Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Thursday evening as the Bobcats beat the Rough Riders 12-1 in five innings.

Brookings led 7-1 through three innings and then scored five runs in the fourth to earn the 11-run victory and the game early.

The Bobcats struck for four runs in the first inning. Morgan Norgaard led off the inning with a single and then scored on an error. Kalla Foerster reached on that error and later came home on a one-out single from Tess Burns. Grace Romsa then hit a double to put runners on second and third. Quinn Kurtenbach was running for Burns and she scored on a Layla Erickson fly out and then Romsa scored on a Ramsie Hinricher single to make it 4-0.

Brookings added three more runs in the second and they all came on one swing of the bat. Addy Bortnem and Norgaard walked to begin the inning and Buys then came to the plate with one out. She blasted the ball over the center field fence and that gave the Bobcats a 7-0 lead heading into the third.

The Rough Riders lone run of the game came in the top of the third on an RBI single.

Foerster and Buys hit back-to-back singles with one out in the bottom of the fourth and Burns walked to load the bases up. Buys and Foerster each scored on an error to make it 9-1. Then Erickson hit a two-run double to push the lead to 11-1. Brookings’ final run of the game came on a two-out single from Keisha Cushing.

Roosevelt went down one-two-three in the top of the fifth and the game ended due to the 10-run rule.

Brookings had 11 hits in the game. Buys was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Romsa and Erickson were each 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Burns was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Foerster and Cushing were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Norgaard was 2-for-2 and Hinricher was 1-for-3.

Burns pitched the first four innings for the ‘Cats. She gave up one unearned run on four hits and had four strikeouts. Ella Pysk got the final three outs and one of those was a strikeout.

Brookings improved to 10-5 and will play again on Friday. The Bobcats will host Mitchell at the Southbrook Softball Complex at 3 p.m.
