Bobcats collect nine aces to sweep Pierre

BROOKINGS — The Brookings Bobcats played one of their best matches of the season, sweeping the Pierre Governors at Brookings High School by scores of 25-22, 25-14 and 25-18 on Tuesday night.

Pierre jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the first set before Brookings went on an 8-2 run to take an 11-8 lead. The Governors jumped back ahead with an 8-2 run but the Bobcats took the lead at 21-20 and were able to win the first set 25-22.

The momentum carried over to a second set where the Bobcats went wire-to-wire, scoring the first four points and never looking back in a 25-14 victory.

Part of the reason the Bobcats took control of the match was their performance from the serving line. With nine team aces, the Bobcats were able to make the Governors pay when they held serve and were able to remain in front even when Pierre mounted any sort of rally.

“Our team served aggressively,” Brookings head coach Erinn Thomas said. “We were able to pass well in serve receive and get into our offense throughout the match.”

With two wins under their belt, the Bobcats fell behind 13-9, but responded with a 7-3 run that gave them a 16-13 lead. The Bobcats finished the Governors off with a 9-5 run and were able to complete the sweep, helping them improve to 13-15 on the season.

“We stayed confident in the third set,” Thomas said. “We talked a lot in practice this week and in timeouts during the match to focus on the next ball. I thought we responded well when Pierre went on a few runs. We were able to side out and I thought our setters put our hitters in great positions tonight.”

Macy Even and Rylee Thompson both led Brookings with 10 kills each. Even added eight digs, an ace and a block while Thompson had three service aces and one dig.

Kymber Buys was also part of the offense with seven kills and three aces to go with 15 assists, 10 digs and two blocks.

Kamryn Streich had eight assists with six digs. Morgan Norgaard had 12 digs and an ace. Lydia Walker had three blocks and Arielle Ferrell had two blocks. Tess Burns also had one block.

With two matches left on the schedule including their home finale against Yankton on Nov. 5, the Bobcats are looking to finish strong. But their primary focus remains just taking things one match at a time.

“Heading into our last two regular season matches, we can continue to play confidently and reset after opponents go on a few runs,” Thomas said. “We also need to take care of the ball on our side.”
