Bobcats lose both games against Harrisburg

BROOKINGS — The Brookings baseball team dropped two games to Harrisburg on Friday night at Bob Shelden Field.

Harrisburg took game one 11-6 and then the Tigers came away with a 6-3 win in game two. 

The Bobcats dropped to 11-17 on the season. They’ll play in the Class A regionals this upcoming weekend and will know their opponent on Monday.

Game 1: Harrisburg 11, Brookings 6

It was a tie game going into the seventh and the Tigers then scored five runs to earn the victory in game one.

Harrisburg broke a 0-0 tie with three runs in the top of the third. The first run of the inning came on a single. The Tigers then scored runs on an error and a fielder’s choice.

Brookings got two of those runs back in the bottom of the inning. Cooper Schneider led off the inning with a double and then Tre Christopherson was walked and Tyson Antonen was hit by a pitch to load the bases up. Schneider scored on a Jase Bauer sacrifice fly and then Christopherson scored on a Jay Harris fielder’s choice to make it 3-2 heading into the fourth.

Harrisburg extended the lead to 4-2 in the fourth with an RBI double but then Brookings took its first lead of the game in the fifth.

Christopherson and Bauer each walked to put two runners on with one out. Christopherson scored on an error by the catcher and Winston Plummer then hit Bauer home with a double to tie the game. Plummer then scored on a Tane Friedrich single to make it 5-4 heading into the sixth.

The Tigers regained the lead in the top of the sixth. They scored both runs on a single to make it 6-5. Brookings would tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Antonen hit a one-out single and then scored on a double from Plummer.

Harrisburg hit an RBI double and RBI triple in back-to-back at bats in the top of the seventh to go up 8-6. Another RBI single and then back-to-back bases-loaded walks made it 11-6.

Brookings got a runner on with an error in the bottom of the seventh but was unable to score any runs and the final was 11-6.

The Bobcats had eight hits. Plummer was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Friedrich was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Bauer was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Antonen and Ryder Anderson were each 1-for-3. Schnieder was 1-for-4. Harris had an RBI without a hit. 

Nolan Wagner pitched the first five innings for Brookings. He gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Christopherson pitched one inning and gave up four earned runs on five hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Talon Hyde pitched two thirds of an inning and gave up two earned runs on one hit with one strikeout and one walk. Ryan Lockrem got the final out in the top of the seventh but gave up one earned run on one hit with one strikeout and three walks.

Game 2: Harrisburg 6, Brookings 3

The Tigers went up 3-0 in the first two innings and did not surrender that lead the rest of the way.

Harrisburg scored runs on an RBI double and a wild pitch in the first inning. Then another run on a wild pitch in the second to put the Tigers up three. They added a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth to make it 4-0.

Brookings got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Schneidder walked to begin the inning and then scored on a single from Bauer. The Bobcats then scored another run in the sixth. Wagner walked to begin the sixth and then advanced to third on a single from Harris. He then scored on a Christopherson ground out.

An RBI triple in the top of the seventh put the Tigers up 6-2. Plummer walked to begin the bottom of the seventh and then Friedrich was hit by a pitch and Wagner walked to load the bases up with no outs. Anderson was then hit by a pitch to score a run but then the next three batters went down in order.

The Bobcats had just three hits. Antonen and Harris were each 1-for-1. Bauer was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Christopherson and Anderson each had an RBI without a hit.

Harris got the start on the mound for the ‘Cats. He gave up three runs, two earned, on two hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Hyde pitched the final four innings and gave up three earned runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and three walks.
