BROOKINGS — The Brookings softball team was unable to fully get its offense going on Tuesday afternoon and the Bobcats fell to Harrisburg 12-6 at the Southbrook Softball Complex.
Neither team scored first and it was Harrisburg who got on the board first in the top of the third. Madelyn Ducheneaux led off the inning with a single and then scored on a ground out from Alexis Fey.
The Tigers pushed the lead to 2-0 in the fourth with a home run from Peyton LaFramboise. A two-run single from Ducheneaux then made it 4-0.
Brookings would then tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. Ramsie Hinricher walked to begin the half inning and Kymber Buys then hit one over the left field wall to cut the lead in half. Addy Bortnem then hit a one-out single and Lexi Erickson hit it over the center field wall to make it 4-4 heading into the fifth.
That’s when things got away from the Bobcats as the Tigers scored seven runs. LaFramboise and B Haffey hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it 6-4. Anna Simunek then hit a two-run double and later scored on an error to make it 9-4. Maleia Knutson capped off the inning with a two-run double and Harrisburg led 11-4.
Kalla Foerster led off the bottom of the fifth with a double. She then came around to score on a Buys double and it was 11-5 heading into the sixth.
Harrisburg got that run back in the top of the sixth with a solo home run from Ava Gross. Brookings cut the lead back to six in the bottom of the inning as Erickson walked and then scored on a single from Ella Pysk.
Each team went down one-two-three in the final inning.
Brookings had seven hits as a team. Buys was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Erickson was 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Pysk was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Foerster was 1-for-2. Bortnem and Hinircher were each 1-for-3.
Tess Burns got the start in the circle for Brookings. She pitched four and one third innings and gave up nine runs, eight earned, on 10 hits with one strikeout and six walks. Kinzey Grendler pitched two thirds of an inning and gave up two runs, one earned, on one hit with one strikeout and two walks. Pysk pitched the final two innings and gave up one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts.
The Bobcats are now 3-2 on the season and play at Tea Area on Thursday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
