BROOKINGS — The Brookings softball team dominated Madison on Tuesday at the Southbrook Softball Complex and came away with an 11-2 victory.
The Bobcats scored all of their runs in the first four innings and kept the Lady Bulldogs off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
The Lady Bulldogs got on the board first with a run in the top of the first. Mara Klingbile reached on an error to start the game and then came home on an Addison Voss single.
Brookings answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Morgan Norgaard drew a walk to begin the inning and then Kymber Buys came to the plate with one out. She launched the ball over the center field wall and the ‘Cats led 2-1 heading into the second.
The Bobcats added four runs in the second. Grace Romsa singled to lead off the inning and Kinzey Grendler followed with a walk. Romsa came home on a single from Norgaard. Buys then came to plate again and hit it over the center field fence again for a three-run home run and Brookings led 6-1 through two innings.
Brookings would score three more runs in the third. Ramsie Hinricher reached on an error with one out and Romsa followed with a double. Tessa Connot ran for Hinricher and she came home on a ground out from Grendler. Norgaard then hit it over the center field fence as well and that pushed the lead to 9-1.
Madison scored its second run of the game in the top of the fourth as Caitlyne Kearin came home on a steal to make it 9-2.
Reece Christianson led off the bottom of the inning with a single but was then thrown out at second on a fielder’s choice from Zoe Miller. Kendal Linstad then hit a one-out single to put two runners on and both of them came home on a Romsa single. That made the final 11-2 as neither team scored the rest of the way.
Brookings had 14 hits as a team. Buys was 4-for-4 with three RBIs and Norgaard was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Romsa was 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Linstad was 1-for-2 and Ella Pysk and Christianson were each 1-for-1. Layla Erickson was 1-for-4. Grendler had an RBI without a hit.
Tess Burns got the start in the circle for the Bobcats. She pitched the first three innings and gave up one unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Psyk pitched the final four innings and gave up one unearned run on one hit with nine strikeouts and one walk.
Brookings will head west next. The Bobcats play at Sturgis Brown on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and at Spearfish on Friday at 6 p.m. They’ll then play at Rapid City Stevens on Saturday at 11 a.m.
